Life boardcasting live

Today was my first radio broadcast with a live guest, Carole Pyke, author, speaker, workshop leader, laughter coach, storyteller and marketing specialist who is passionate about words, people and hugs. Carole was amazing, she had such an interesting set of moments and experiences to share; the best of which had to be the fact that she hugged Nelson Mandela. Well she became a Goddess in my eyes immediately.

As you may recall my show on www.playvybz.com goes out live. Broadcasting live is a real lesson in learning to live with “what is” as opposed to striving for perfection. I know I am one of those people who is sometimes immobilised by the need to have everything perfect. (ok so that I didn't sound like a complete basket case, I modified that to say “sometimes” and “some things” when in actual fact “100%” of the time and “everything” would not only be more accurate but also a lot more honest!) I admit it I can be anal when it comes to having to gets things perfect. Worse still, I take out my metaphorical sackcloth and ashes and adorn them if it turns out that what I thought was perfect was indeed marred by a single speck of not “good enough”.

My guest today Carole, said something which will now become my motto; “the only thing I have in common with Superwoman is gender”– nice one Carole; I finally get it; you plus live radio has persuaded me to hang up my cape once and for all.

Yes, it would be great if I didn't occasionally fluff my words; say em more than twice in a sentence; forget to turn on the microphone; forget to turn off the microphone; cue the wrong track or accidentally bang the microphone whilst gesticulated wildly. However, sometimes that’s not how it goes. This is real life, and when it doesn’t go to my plan, there was nothing I can do except just keep going.

Real life doesn’t always give you the opportunity to screw up the piece of paper and start afresh on a new sheet, or yell: cut! Take 120. Action! Sometimes you simply have to live with what you've done. And the strange thing is, not only is life a lot more fun, a lot more relaxed and a lot more real, when you throw way the cape, the spandex pants and the contrasting colour tights; you discover that those little “mistakes” don’t really matter. Everyone gets that you’re human and as they say; Sh*t happens! Even the BBC can't produce perfect live broadcasts 100% of the time and they are the experts with decades of experience.

Life is live, most of the time you only get one take and that’s it, no edit, no reworks. Therefore, rather than trying to get it perfect, just get on and live it, and be happy with your “live” broadcast warts and all.

What is your superhero persona and when was the last time they took a day off? Please share your experiences I love reading about them.
