This is the first Tuesday in ages I've not been at Tae Kwon Do (it’s the summer recess). Well actually I didn't go last week either, but that was because I was giving a presentation to a small business meeting (it was much smaller than I had been led to believe) so l was not at home. What I should have said was this is the first Tuesday in ages that I have been at home in the evening. Guess what I did? Did I catch up on all the work that I've got to do? No. Did I get down to the studying that I've been promising myself I'd do for ages? No. Did I even practice my Tae Kwon Do to maintain my skill level? (After all I am supposed to be going for my black belt grading in December). No. What I did was cooked dinner, put the rest of the laundry in the washing machine and tumble dryer and watch East Enders and Holby City!
Verdict: East Enders hasn't changed one bit! I've not watched it for years (I think Grant Mitchell was still in it the last time I was a regular watcher) I have peaked at the headline grabbing episodes: such as the Ronnie- gives- backs –swapped- baby; and bloke- falls- off- roof -and -dies, but that’s it. It's not that I have anything against East Enders. Actually I do, it's like the News Of The World for soaps – all bad news and family destruction with special attention given to making ethnic minorities look particularly brainless.
Holby City on the other hand, was as good as I remembered it. I admit I'm an avid hospital drama fan. ER, Gray’s Anatomy, St Elsewhere, Casualty, Scrubs, The Practice, need I go on? Indeed, hospital dramas have to be in my top five TVs show categories.
It really sounds like I watch a lot of TV, actually I don't. Thank God for i-players and plus boxes so you can watch what you like when you like. For me, this normally means late at night while I'm eating a very late dinner. However I'm happy to admit I do actually like watching so-called junk TV, by that I mean the type of program that you don't have to give much thought or give much commitment to.
I have noticed that there seems to be a sort of snobbery around the type of TV programs one chooses watch. Some people go as far as to condemn TV watches altogether. I often hear people say with pride “oh I never watch TV, in fact we don't even have one". I never could quite understand this; there is so much information on TV and so much entertainment. Yes, you could be out there doing something else, however I find it a great way to chill when you have a limited amount of time.
It is important to have time out from being superwoman/man. Busy intellectual people have a tendency to feel that they should always be doing something productive. As a result we can end up feeling guilty when we take time out to do so-called frivolous things. You know that saying “dance like no one's watching you“, how about this one: “chill out like no one really cares what you are doing.”
Therefore, in honour of all the TV watching intellectuals here are my top five TV programme categories with top shows in each category. In reverse order:
5. Elimination talent shows – America's next top model
4. Super natural – Medium
3. Hospital dramas -Grey's anatomy (although I detest the Meredith Grey character)
2. Crime dramas-Criminal Minds
1. Science fiction - Star Trek (all of them except Deep Space 9, which sucked big time.)
Do you have a secret passion for watching TV? What are your top five shows? I’d love to compare notes.
